Parents of 5-Year-Old Nonverbal Girl Arrested After Body Found in Waterway — Hours After Mom Called Her “Mommy’s Little Angel”

The body of 5-year-old Saylor Hayes was recovered from a waterway near a vacation rental on Pawleys Island, South Carolina, on the morning of August 31, 2026. Less than 24 hours earlier, the nonverbal autistic child had been reported missing from the family’s rental home in the Hagley Estates community. On September 1, her parents, John Herb Hayes III, 70, and Geordyn Nichole Hayes, 31, were arrested in Carter County, Tennessee, and charged with unlawfully placing a child at risk and willfully abandoning a child.

Saylor, who lived with her family in the Bristol area of Virginia, had severe nonverbal autism. Court documents describe her as having a documented history of elopement — wandering away from caregivers — and a strong attraction to water. Because of these risks, she had been enrolled in the Project Lifesaver program since 2024 and fitted with a specialized tracking transmitter. The device is designed to stay on continuously; its band must be cut to remove it.

According to arrest warrants, the transmitter was taken off before the family left Virginia for the South Carolina trip. Investigators later located the device inside a vehicle at the family’s Virginia residence. On the day she disappeared, Saylor was left unsupervised within approximately 15 meters of a body of water while wearing a light blue one-piece bathing suit and a lanyard. She was reported missing around midday on August 30.

A large multi-agency search followed, involving deputies, K-9 teams, drones, boats, helicopters equipped with Project Lifesaver receivers, and community volunteers. Search efforts initially focused on locating the tracking signal. Warrants state that the parents encouraged authorities to concentrate on the tracking technology even though they knew Saylor was not wearing the device, and that they directed attention away from the nearby water. South Carolina Department of Natural Resources agents found her body floating near Hagley Landing around 9:45 a.m. on August 31.

Saylor Hayes, a nonverbal 5-year-old, was found ᴅᴇᴀᴅ in South Carolina waters after wandering from her family's Pawleys Island vacation rental.

The Georgetown County coroner reported no visible signs of trauma. An autopsy was scheduled for September 4 at the Medical University of South Carolina to determine the official cause and manner of death. Neither parent has been charged with homicide. The charges center on the alleged failure to provide supervision and safeguards appropriate for a severely nonverbal, autistic 5-year-old with known water attraction and elopement history.

Hours before the arrests were announced, Geordyn Hayes posted an online tribute. She shared a pH๏τo of Saylor smiling on a slide, digitally enhanced with a halo and angel wings, and the caption “Mommy’s little angel.” She also shared videos of the child playing on an inflatable water slide, describing it as suitable entertainment for autistic children drawn to water who cannot swim.

Sheriff Carter Weaver of Georgetown County emphasized that parents and caregivers hold a fundamental duty to protect children who cannot protect themselves. The couple remains in Tennessee custody pending extradition to South Carolina. The investigation continues, and both defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

The case has drawn attention to the challenges of caring for children with high elopement risk and the critical role of consistent use of safety devices during travel and unfamiliar settings. Officials have stressed that the charges stem from evidence developed during the search and subsequent inquiry into the circumstances surrounding Saylor’s unsupervised access to the water.
