An organization that honors fallen U.S. service members from Mᴀssachusetts and their families held a memorial service for the Lawrence native who was killed during Thursday’s bombing in Kabul, Afghanistan.

Veterans and their families gathered at the Mᴀssachusetts Fallen Heroes Memorial in Boston’s Seaport District on Saturday to honor fallen U.S. Marine Corps Sgt. Johanny Rosario Pichardo.

A wreath was laid in Rosario’s honor and 13 roses were presented at the memorial to honor the 25-year-old and the other 12 U.S. service members who died in the attack.

“We’re seeing vets and Gold Star families coming together to be supportive, and that’s all we can really do right now is use our experience and use our network and connections to get through this,” said Dan Magoon, a U.S. Army combat veteran and executive director of Mᴀssachusetts Fallen Heroes.

“I’m so sorry for the loss of their loved one,” Kelsey Powers, whose brother died in combat in 2008, said of the victims’ families. “Thirteen. Thirteen in one day (and) 170 (Afghans) in a day. That’s humans, lives, babies, children – it’s just sad.”

“I’m calling it a mistake of an evacuation plan, which makes me very angry. Lives were lost. My veteran community is grieving,” said Mary Ann Callahan, a Gold Star parent.

In Rosario’s hometown of Lawrence, Mayor Kendrys Vasquez honored the 2014 Lawrence High School graduate.

“I have been in touch with the family to extend our most sincere condolences from myself, my family, as well as on behalf of all residents of the city of Lawrence,” Vasquez said.

The White House confirmed that the remains of Rosario and the other 12 service members killed in Kabul are being transported back to the United States.
