Plot Overview:
Green Street Hooligans is a gritty, hard-hitting drama that explores the world of football (soccer) hooliganism, focusing on the personal transformation of an American student who becomes entangled in the violent subculture surrounding the sport in London. The story centers on Matt Buckner (Elijah Wood), an innocent and idealistic Harvard student who is expelled from university after being wrongly accused of drug possession. With no plans or future in America, Matt travels to London to stay with his sister, Shannon (Claire Forlani), and her husband, Steve (Marc Warren).
In London, Matt is introduced to Steve’s circle of friends, who are members of the notorious Green Street Elite (GSE), a violent group of football hooligans who follow the West Ham United team.
At first, Matt is horrified by the violent nature of the GSE, but he gradually becomes drawn into their world, forming a bond with the group’s leader, Pete Dunham (Charlie Hunnam). Pete is charismatic, fiercely loyal, and the driving force behind the GSE’s clashes with rival hooligan firms.
As Matt gets deeper into the lifestyle, he struggles with his own internal conflict, caught between his growing loyalty to his new friends and the realization that violence is the core of the hooligan culture. The film builds to an explosive confrontation between the GSE and their rivals, testing Matt’s courage, identity, and ultimately his moral compass.
