Chaos Walking (2021)
Chaos Walking (2021) is a science fiction film directed by Doug Liman, based on the novel The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness. The story is set in a dystopian future on a distant planet called “New World,” where humans have colonized and live under a strange condition where all men are able to hear each other’s thoughts, a phenomenon known as “Noise.” This constant flow of thoughts is visible to everyone around, leaving no room for privacy.
The film follows Todd Hewitt (Tom Holland), a young man who has grown up in this world where the Noise is overwhelming and inescapable. Todd believes he is the last boy in the town of Prentisstown, but everything changes when he discovers a girl, Viola (Daisy Ridley), who has crash-landed on the planet. Viola is from a nearby settlement, and her arrival brings chaos as she is the first woman Todd has ever encountered in the town.
As the town’s dark secrets unfold, Todd learns that the town’s leader, Mayor Prentiss (Mads Mikkelsen), has a sinister plan to control the Noise and manipulate the people. Todd and Viola must escape, fighting against dangerous forces while navigating their own evolving relationship. Along the way, they uncover deeper conspiracies about the planet and the true nature of the Noise.
Chaos Walking explores themes of power, control, and identity, while questioning the impact of technology on human relationships and society. The film blends action, suspense, and thought-provoking ideas as Todd and Viola attempt to survive in a world that is both visually and mentally overwhelming.
