My Boyfriend’s Back (1993)

My Boyfriend’s Back (1993) is about a teenage boy who rises from the dead in order to win over a popular girl at school. Although he is only a background character, this was Matthew McConaughey’s first film role.

Fan Review: “My Boyfriend’s Back,” a delightfully oddball gem from the 1990s, stands out from today’s teen comedies with its unique blend of humor, bizarre situations, and surprising sweetness. Mary Beth Hurt and Edward Herrman shine as Johnny’s supportive and wonderfully unfazed parents, embracing their son’s return from the grave with remarkable aplomb.

The talented supporting cast, including Traci Lind, Matthew Fox, Austin Pendleton, Paul Dooley, and the late Phillip Seymour Hoffman, each deliver memorable performances in this demented comedy.

For twelve years, Johnny Dingle (Andrew Lowery) has pined for Missy McCloud (Traci Lind), the prettiest girl in school. With the senior prom on the horizon, he finally resolves to ask her out. However, Missy’s jock boyfriend, Buck Van Patten (Matthew Fox), crushes his hopes. Undeterred, Johnny concocts an utterly crazy plan to win her over.

What makes this film so captivating is its bizarre yet romantic core. Andrew Lowery masterfully portrays Johnny’s deep affection for Missy, a love so profound it compels him to return from the dead for that long-awaited prom dance.

If you have a penchant for the strange, the undead, and comedies with a delightfully twisted edge, I wholeheartedly recommend “My Boyfriend’s Back.”
