Errementari (2017)

Errementari: The Blacksmith and the Devil (2017) is a dark fantasy horror film directed by Paul Urkijo Alijo, based on a Basque folktale. Set in 19th-century Spain, the story revolves around Patxi, a reclusive and fearsome blacksmith who lives in an isolated forge. Locals fear him, suspecting he has made a pact with the devil due to his mysterious and hostile nature.
Unbeknownst to the villagers, Patxi has captured and imprisoned a demon named Sartael in his forge. Bound by a grudge, the blacksmith relentlessly tortures the demon, seeking revenge for the suffering he endured during the war. Their conflict is interrupted when a curious orphan girl, Usue, stumbles upon the forge. Drawn by her innocence and courage, she becomes entangled in the supernatural battle between man and demon.

As secrets unfold, the film explores themes of guilt, redemption, and the duality of human nature. Patxi’s dark past is revealed, as well as the true nature of his supposed “deal with the devil.” The story builds to a dramatic confrontation where Usue’s bravery becomes the key to resolving the tensions between humanity and the infernal.
With its stunning visuals, atmospheric setting, and a blend of folklore and horror, Errementari offers a unique and haunting tale about the consequences of vengeance and the possibility of salvation.
