The investigation into the tragic death of Nolan Wells, an 18-year-old who disappeared off Mississippi’s Gulf Coast, has entered a critical new phase as forensic debates intensify and prosecutors prepare to present the case to a Jackson County grand jury.
An independent autopsy conducted by forensic pathologist Dr. Roger Mitchell concluded that the cause and manner of death remain undetermined, noting that non-accidental factors could not be ruled out.
The findings highlighted specific unresolved physical details, including red discoloration in the soft tissue at the back of Wells’ head.
Additionally, the independent review was limited because internal neck structures were retained during the initial state autopsy for further examination.
The 22-page analysis identified a material gap in the timeline between the last confirmed sighting of Wells and the departure of the vessel transporting him.
Forensic experts are currently evaluating audio recordings, cell phone data, and oceanographic tide models to determine how his body arrived at the recovery site.
With the Mississippi State Medical Examiner’s official autopsy complete but withheld from the public, prosecutors are directing all physical evidence, toxicology results, and witness testimony directly to the grand jury to evaluate potential criminal charges.
