Nepal school principal saved 1,600 students from flooding before school was buried

A local school principal is being hailed as a hero for evacuating 1,600 school children before their building was buried by the flood and mudslide.

Amid the tragedies during the ᴅᴇᴀᴅly Nepal flooding disaster, a local school principal is earning praise for his life-saving actions.

At 9:20 a.m. Wednesday morning, Rajendra Dawabi, principal of the Tribhuvan Trishuli secondary school in Trishuli Bazaar, Nepal, received a panicked call from a friend in Betrawati, five miles upstream on the Trishuli River.

“He said the village was gone: taken by the river,” Dawabi said to The Times. “He told me to run.”

As Dawabi took a moment to consider the situation, a parent dashed into his office, saying the water was rising fast. Dawabi rang the school bell, telling teachers and 900 students to evacuate to higher ground. However, another 700 students were inbound on school buses.

Dawabi called them all and told them to turn back, he told The Times. All but one did. Another pulled across a bridge, just before it collapsed.

The school was destroyed in the wall of flooding that carried away thousands of people, homes and businesses.

Although hailed as a hero, Dawabi resists the moniker. “What else could I do?” he asked The Times as he looked over the muddy ruins where the school was.

“We all climbed uphill, and when we looked back, we saw the whole school was washed away,” Dawabi recalled to OpenTheMagazine.

The death toll from last week’s flooding that hit Nepal’s mountainous border region near China rose to more than 1,000 on Tuesday, with 4,274 people still missing.
