A fresh development has renewed attention on the disappearance of 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie, the mother of Today co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, after investigators reportedly returned to the Tucson neighborhood surrounding her home.

The renewed activity comes more than six months after Nancy disappeared from her Arizona residence. Authorities have previously said they believe she was taken from the home against her will, and the FBI has remained involved in the investigation. Nancy has still not been located.

So, what changed?

One possibility now being examined is the impact of Arizona’s heavy monsoon rains. Recent reporting indicates investigators have searched the neighborhood again, with a retired law-enforcement official suggesting that shifting soil, vegetation and other landscape changes caused by the storms could potentially expose evidence that was previously difficult to detect. However, authorities have not publicly confirmed that the weather triggered the new activity.

The renewed attention also follows the release of two alleged ransom notes by the Pima County Sheriff’s Department. Investigators said the documents contain distinctive wording and previously unpublished details that could help identify whoever wrote them. Authorities reported receiving a slight increase in tips after releasing the notes, although none has yet cracked the case.

The FBI has previously examined evidence from Nancy’s property, including surveillance material and DNA. Investigators have also recovered additional motion-triggered camera images from cameras around the home, although those images reportedly did not show anything suspicious.

Adding another layer of uncertainty, forensic psychologist Kris Mohandie has publicly questioned whether the ransom notes are genuine. His theory is an outside opinion, not an official finding, and investigators continue to examine all available evidence.

For Nancy’s family, the most important fact remains painfully simple: she is still missing. Savannah Guthrie has repeatedly pleaded for anyone responsible to provide information that could finally reveal her mother’s whereabouts.

The sight of investigators returning to the area naturally raises hopes that a new lead may have emerged. But at this stage, officials have not announced a breakthrough, suspect, arrest, or discovery of Nancy.
