THE THINGS I HAD CHOSEN NOT TO SEE

PART 2: THE MAN WHO HAD BEEN WATCHING

I got out of bed and walked into the hallway.

I didn’t want Daniel hearing the conversation.

“Ryan, what happened three years ago?”

He was quiet.

Then he asked:

“Do you remember your birthday dinner? The one at the Italian restaurant downtown?”

I closed my eyes.

Of course I remembered.

It had been one of my favorite birthdays.

Daniel had arranged dinner with several friends, and Megan had surprised me with a beautiful bracelet.

Ryan had been there.

Everyone had laughed.

I had gone home believing it was a perfect evening.

“What about it?”

“Megan spent most of that night sitting beside Daniel. You went outside to take a call from your sister. When you came back, they were holding hands under the table.”

I stopped walking.

“What?”

“I saw them.”

I gripped the phone.

“You’re sure?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Ryan sighed.

“Because I confronted Megan afterward. She told me she had been reaching for a napkin and that Daniel had simply moved his hand. She said I was being jealous.”

I felt cold.

“Did you believe her?”

“No.”

“Then why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because she cried. She told me I was destroying our marriage over something innocent. She promised it wouldn’t happen again.”

I leaned against the hallway wall.

I remembered that evening.

I remembered Megan laughing with Daniel.

I remembered her complimenting his shirt.

I remembered her telling me that I was lucky to have such a thoughtful husband.

But I had never noticed anything beneath the table.

Ryan continued.

“Then there was the Christmas party.”

I frowned.

“What Christmas party?”

“Three years ago. At your house.”

I remembered that one too.

Megan had arrived with a bottle of wine and a gift for Daniel.

A leather wallet.

It had been more expensive than anything I had bought him that year.

She had said she noticed his old wallet was falling apart.

I had laughed.

I had even thanked her for being so thoughtful.

Ryan’s voice interrupted my thoughts.

“She told Daniel she had chosen it because she knew his taste better than anyone.”

I closed my eyes.

“She said that?”

“Yes.”

“What did Daniel say?”

“Nothing. He laughed.”

I felt something twist inside my chest.

Ryan continued.

“After everyone left, I asked her why she was buying your husband expensive gifts. She said you were her best friend and that she considered Daniel family.”

I swallowed.

“And you accepted that?”

“No. But I wanted to believe her.”

His voice cracked slightly.

“I wanted to believe the woman I married wasn’t deliberately making me feel like an outsider in my own marriage.”

I remained silent.

For a moment, I heard only the distant sound of a television downstairs.

Then Ryan said:

“There’s more.”

I closed my eyes.

“Tell me.”

He explained that Megan had developed a habit of finding reasons to spend time with Daniel when I wasn’t around.

She would ask him for advice about things she could easily have discussed with Ryan.

She would send him messages about work problems.

She would ask his opinion about clothes, restaurants, and personal decisions.

At first, it had seemed harmless.

But eventually, Ryan noticed that her conversations with Daniel had become private.

Whenever he asked who she was messaging, she would say it was a group conversation.

Whenever he approached, she would turn her phone over.

And whenever he questioned her, she accused him of being controlling.

I felt sick.

“How long has this been happening?”

“At least three years.”

I pressed my hand against my mouth.

Three years.

I had spent three years inviting Megan into my home.

Three years telling her things about my marriage.

Three years trusting her to protect the very relationship she was quietly trying to become part of.

“Did Daniel know?”

Ryan hesitated.

“Yes.”

The answer hit me harder than anything else.

“What do you mean?”

“I confronted Daniel once.”

“When?”

“About eighteen months ago.”

I leaned against the wall.

“What happened?”

Ryan told me he had seen Megan sending Daniel messages late at night.

One evening, he had walked into their bedroom and found her laughing at her phone.

When he asked what was so funny, she said Daniel had sent her something.

Ryan asked why my husband was messaging his wife after midnight.

Megan accused him of being suspicious.

The argument lasted nearly an hour.

The following day, Ryan called Daniel.

He told him he was uncomfortable with how close Megan had become to him.

Daniel listened.

Then he said he understood.

He promised to keep their conversations appropriate.

But according to Ryan, nothing really changed.

“Daniel told me it was harmless,” Ryan said. “He said Megan was your best friend, that she was just friendly, and that I shouldn’t turn it into something it wasn’t.”

I closed my eyes.

“And you believed him?”

“No.”

His answer came quickly.

“But I didn’t know what else to do.”

I looked toward the staircase.

Daniel was downstairs.

Probably watching television.

Probably wondering why I was awake.

“Did they ever have an affair?”

Ryan became quiet.

“I don’t know.”

My heart began pounding.

“Ryan.”

“I don’t have proof of anything physical, Claire. I’m not going to tell you something I can’t prove.”

I appreciated his honesty.

But the absence of proof did not make the situation less painful.

Ryan continued.

“What I do know is that Megan liked being the person Daniel turned to. She wanted to be the woman he told things to before he told you.”

I felt my throat tighten.

“What things?”

“Personal things.”

He paused.

“Your arguments. Your worries. Things you told him privately.”

I closed my eyes.

That was worse than I had imagined.

Because I had told Megan things about my marriage.

I had told her about the times Daniel and I struggled to communicate.

I had told her about my insecurities.

I had told her that sometimes I felt Daniel was becoming distant.

And apparently, she had used those private conversations to become closer to my husband.

“Did she tell you that?”

Ryan exhaled.

“She told me Daniel said he felt misunderstood sometimes. She said she was the only person who knew how to calm him down.”

I couldn’t speak.

Ryan continued.

“She also said you were lucky because Daniel needed someone who understood him.”

I looked down at the floor.

The hallway seemed unusually cold.

“Why are you telling me this now?”

“Because tonight, she sat on his lap in front of thirty people.”

His voice became sharper.

“And when you came back, she didn’t even pretend to be embarrassed.”

I remembered her smile.

The way she had tightened her arm around Daniel.

The way she had called me weird.

Ryan continued.

“She wanted to see what you would do.”

I felt my stomach turn.

“What?”

“She wanted to know whether Daniel would defend her. She wanted to know whether you would challenge her. And when he didn’t immediately move away, she got exactly what she wanted.”

I stood completely still.

Then Ryan said something that made me question the entire evening.

“Claire, she told me something before we left the restaurant.”

“What?”

“She said Daniel had promised her he would never make her feel like an outsider.”

I gripped the phone.

“What does that mean?”

“I don’t know exactly.”

He sighed.

“But I think you should ask your husband how much of your marriage he has been sharing with your best friend.”

The call ended shortly afterward.

I remained in the hallway.

For several minutes, I couldn’t move.

Then I heard footsteps on the stairs.

Daniel appeared at the top.

He looked sleepy.

“What are you doing?”

I stared at him.

“Who was that?”

“Ryan.”

His expression changed.

“What did he want?”

I studied his face.

“To talk.”

Daniel rubbed his eyes.

“About what?”

I looked at him for a long moment.

Then I asked:

“Have you been talking to Megan about our marriage?”

He stopped moving.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

A tiny hesitation.

A brief flicker of recognition.

Then he shook his head.

“Why would you ask that?”

I felt my chest tighten.

“Because Ryan says you’ve been sharing things with her for years.”

Daniel exhaled.

“Ryan is angry. He’s trying to create problems.”

“Is it true?”

He looked away.

“Claire, don’t start.”

I stared at him.

“That’s not an answer.”

He walked past me toward the bedroom.

“We’ll talk tomorrow.”

I followed him.

“No. We’ll talk now.”

He turned.

“You’re tired. I’m tired. This isn’t the time.”

I watched him close the bedroom door.

And for the first time in nine years of marriage, I wondered whether my husband had been having conversations with another woman that he deliberately kept from me.

The next morning, I woke before Daniel.

He was asleep beside me.

I looked at him for several minutes.

Then I got up, made coffee, and sat at the kitchen table.

I opened my phone.

There was a new message from Megan.

“Claire, I think Ryan is putting ideas in your head. Please don’t let his marriage problems affect ours.”

I stared at it.

Then another message appeared.

“Daniel and I have always been close because you and I are close. You know that.”

I read the words slowly.

She was still doing it.

Still explaining.

Still trying to make her behavior seem harmless.

I typed:

“Did Daniel ever tell you things about our marriage that I told you privately?”

The typing indicator appeared almost immediately.

Then disappeared.

A minute later, Megan responded.

“That’s a ridiculous question.”

I placed the phone down.

I didn’t need to argue.

I needed to understand exactly how much of my life had been discussed without my knowledge.

And I knew there was only one person who could answer that.

Daniel.
