THE WOMAN WHO WANTED MY PLACE

PART 4: THE LAST THING I WAS WILLING TO IGNORE

I drove home slowly.

I kept thinking about Megan’s words.

“Daniel and I have always understood each other.”

I remembered the way she had looked at him during dinner.

The way she had held his neck.

The way she had tightened her arm when she saw me.

It hadn’t been spontaneous.

It had been deliberate.

She had wanted me to see it.

And she had expected me to feel embarrassed enough to remain silent.

When I arrived home, Daniel was waiting in the living room.

He stood as soon as I entered.

“Where have you been?”

“Talking to Megan.”

His expression changed.

“What did she say?”

I put my purse down.

“She admitted you’ve been sharing things about our marriage.”

He sighed.

“Claire, I told you that already.”

“She also told me you discuss things with her that you don’t feel comfortable telling me.”

He looked away.

I continued.

“She said you understand each other.”

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

“She’s exaggerating.”

“Is she?”

He didn’t answer.

I sat down.

“Daniel, I want you to tell me something honestly.”

He remained standing.

“What?”

“Have you ever considered being with Megan?”

His expression changed immediately.

“No.”

“Have you ever wanted her?”

“No.”

“Then why did you allow this?”

He looked frustrated.

“I didn’t know she was going to sit on my lap.”

“But you knew she was getting too close.”

He hesitated.

I watched him.

“Ryan told you, didn’t he?”

Daniel looked down.

“Yes.”

I felt my chest tighten.

“When?”

“About a year and a half ago.”

“What did he say?”

“That Megan was crossing boundaries. That he didn’t like the way she was messaging me.”

“And what did you say?”

Daniel sighed.

“I told him he was overreacting.”

I stared at him.

“Why?”

“Because I didn’t think there was anything serious happening.”

I shook my head.

“You knew he was uncomfortable.”

“Yes.”

“You knew Megan was getting too close.”

He didn’t answer.

“And you continued.”

Daniel sat down.

For the first time, he looked genuinely ashamed.

“I liked the attention.”

The words were quiet.

I looked at him.

He continued.

“She made me feel appreciated. She listened when I complained about work. She told me I was a good husband.”

I laughed bitterly.

“Did she?”

“Claire.”

“Did she tell you that while sitting on your lap?”

He lowered his head.

I stood.

“Do you know what hurts most?”

He looked up.

“It’s not that Megan wanted your attention.”

I paused.

“It’s that you gave her access to parts of our marriage that I believed were private.”

He looked down again.

I continued.

“You let her become the person you went to when you were unhappy with me. You let her believe she understood you better than your wife. And every time I noticed something strange, you told me I was imagining things.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“I’m sorry.”

I wanted to believe him.

But an apology could not erase three years of secrecy.

I walked upstairs.

For the next two days, Daniel and I barely spoke.

He tried several times to start a conversation.

I told him I needed time.

Meanwhile, Megan continued sending messages.

The first was an apology.

“I’m sorry if I made you uncomfortable.”

The second was an explanation.

“I never intended to come between you and Daniel.”

The third was an accusation.

“Ryan has been trying to destroy our friendship for years because he’s insecure.”

I read every message.

Then I stopped responding.

On the third evening, she called.

I let it ring.

She called again.

Then she sent a message.

“Claire, please. Twelve years of friendship can’t end over one misunderstanding.”

I stared at the screen.

One misunderstanding.

That was what she called it.

Not the expensive gifts.

Not the private conversations.

Not the repeated boundary crossings.

Not the way she had used things I told her in confidence to become closer to my husband.

And certainly not the moment she sat on his lap and smiled at me.

I finally answered.

“Megan, I need you to tell me one thing. Did you ever want Daniel to leave me?”

The phone remained silent.

Then she replied.

“That’s an awful thing to ask.”

I typed:

“Please answer.”

She didn’t.

Instead, she called.

I answered.

Her voice was trembling.

“Claire, I never wanted to hurt you.”

“That isn’t an answer.”

She sighed.

“I care about Daniel.”

I closed my eyes.

“As a friend?”

She was silent.

Then she said:

“I don’t know what you want me to say.”

I felt tears gather.

“I want you to tell me the truth.”

She began crying.

“Daniel and I have a connection.”

I gripped the phone.

“What kind of connection?”

She hesitated.

“He understands me.”

I felt my stomach turn.

“Does he know you feel that way?”

She didn’t answer.

Then I heard her say:

“I think he knows.”

I ended the call.

For several minutes, I sat in the dark living room.

I wasn’t sure whether Daniel had understood what Megan wanted.

I wasn’t sure whether he had encouraged her deliberately.

But I knew one thing.

She had been allowed to become part of our marriage in a way I had never agreed to.

And my husband had helped her do it.

That night, I asked Daniel to sit with me.

He came downstairs and sat opposite me.

I told him about Megan’s call.

He listened without interrupting.

When I repeated her words about their connection, he closed his eyes.

“Claire, I never promised her anything.”

I nodded.

“Did you ever tell her you felt the same way?”

“No.”

“Did you ever encourage her to believe you might?”

He looked down.

“I didn’t think she believed that.”

I stared at him.

“How could you not know?”

He rubbed his face.

“Because I thought we were friends.”

I shook my head.

“Ryan tried to warn you.”

He nodded.

“I know.”

“And you ignored him.”

“Yes.”

I leaned back.

Then I asked:

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Daniel looked at me for a long time.

Finally, he said:

“Because I knew you would be hurt.”

I almost laughed.

“You knew I would be hurt, so you decided I shouldn’t know?”

He had no answer.

I stood.

“I need to decide whether I can trust you again.”

He looked frightened.

“Claire, please.”

I raised my hand.

“Don’t ask me to decide tonight.”

I walked upstairs.

The following morning, I received a message from Ryan.

“Can we meet?”

I agreed.

We met at a small café near the river.

Ryan looked exhausted.

He had dark circles beneath his eyes and a tired expression I had never noticed before.

I sat across from him.

“How long have you been dealing with this?”

He gave a humorless laugh.

“Long enough.”

I looked at him.

“Why did you stay?”

He stared into his coffee.

“Because I loved her.”

I understood.

He continued.

“I kept hoping she would recognize what she was doing. Every time I confronted her, she said I was jealous. Every time I asked her to stop messaging Daniel, she said I was trying to control her friendships.”

I remained quiet.

Ryan looked up.

“Do you know what she told me after your birthday dinner?”

I shook my head.

“She said Daniel was the only man who made her feel interesting.”

I felt my throat tighten.

Ryan continued.

“She said you didn’t appreciate him enough.”

I looked down.

“Did she say anything else?”

He nodded.

“She said that if Daniel had met her before you, things might have been different.”

I closed my eyes.

It was almost identical to what Ryan had told me before.

Then he reached into his jacket and took out his phone.

“There is something else I want you to see.”

He opened a photograph.

It showed a message conversation between him and Megan.

The date was nearly two years earlier.

I read the words slowly.

Megan had written:

“Sometimes I think Daniel and I understand each other better than Claire and I do.”

Ryan had replied:

“Then you need to stop encouraging something that isn’t appropriate.”

Megan’s response was:

“You’re making it sound dirty. We’re just close.”

Ryan had written:

“Then why do you hide your conversations?”

Megan had replied:

“Because Claire would misunderstand.”

I stared at the screen.

Ryan put his phone away.

“That’s what I’ve been living with.”

I looked at him.

“Why didn’t you show me earlier?”

He sighed.

“Because I didn’t want to destroy your marriage without knowing exactly what was happening. I hoped Daniel would put a stop to it.”

I nodded slowly.

Then I asked:

“Do you think anything physical happened?”

Ryan shook his head.

“I don’t know. I have no proof. But I know the emotional part went too far.”

He looked at me.

“And I know Megan wanted something from Daniel that she wasn’t getting from me.”

I swallowed.

“Do you still love her?”

Ryan looked toward the window.

“I don’t know anymore.”

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then he said:

“Claire, I think we both need to stop letting them tell us what happened.”

I nodded.

Because he was right.

For years, Megan had described her behavior as harmless.

Daniel had described it as friendship.

And I had accepted those explanations because I trusted them.

But now I knew that the truth had been sitting in front of me all along.

And I was finally ready to face it.
